In Review: 30th National Conference on Incontinence
Cecile Pham
I recently attended the 30th National Conference on Incontinence (NCOI) in Melbourne, May 11-14th. The NCOI is a multidisciplinary conference exploring all aspects of incontinence care, including urology, urogynaecology, colorectal, nursing and allied health. This year's highlights included keynote speaker, disability advocate, paralympian and 2022 Australian of the Year, Dylan Alcott, as well as an international expert panel discussion on mesh complications.
Moments in Urology
Jas Coles-Black
New technologies and the richness in opportunities for innovation in our specialty excites many young Urologists. I was thrilled to be invited as Faculty for the Biofabrication for Surgeons Workshop by the Herston Biofabrication Institute (HBI) to speak on regulation in medical 3D printing. This was the first 3D printing workshop to attract RACS CPD accreditation at the recent RACS ASC.
I was treated to a tour of their remarkable point of care facilities. Located at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, HBI produces hundreds of anatomical models and guides annually, servicing the Metro North health network.
There I met Urology researchers Becca Murray and Georges Mehawed, who shared the awesome 3D printed pyeloplasty trainer prototype they are working on.
Thank you to HBI for hosting me! Looking forward to future collaborations between HBI and YURO.
Interview with Dr John Bailie
Romy Mondschein
This month I spoke to Dr John Bailie (left). John is a UK-trained urologist who originally undertook a fellowship in Melbourne before realising that Queensland has much better weather! He took up a Senior Medical Officer position at Redcliffe Hospital, Metro North Hospital and Health Service, in 2020. It was wonderful to hear John's insights on the future of urology research, sub-specialisation and life outside of work.
UroGP 2022 in Review
David Chen and James Gunasegaram
The upshot: UroGP is an annual confefence where urologists come together to share their knowledge with general practitioners. While it’s primarily aimed at GPs, its resulting accessibility makes it a great place for students and junior doctors interested in urology to come and learn about urological topics and meet other people who share a passion for urology. This year marked a return to in-person events, meaning we had plenty of time to meet delegates from all corners of allied health and medicine. If you’ve read their articles or listened to their podcasts, they’re probably here!
