Events in WA: GP Urology Masterclass (June 2022)

Matthew Chau, YURO WA Representative

The 5th Annual General Practice Urology Masterclass took place in Perth, Western Australia earlier this year. Its aim is to provide gold-standard education relevant to urology presentations in general practice. Eight Perth-based urologists provided a full day of informative sessions regarding all things Urology. One of my favourite talks was from Dr Steve McCombie, discussing bladder cancer. He spoke in depth about the significance of macroscopic haematuria, novel therapies and current practice for bladder cancer treatment. GPs shared their experiences with urology presentations in the community, including aspects of urology unique to this setting. It was interesting to discuss the differences in current community practice and hospital practice. Many common issues such as obstructive LUTS, PSA testing and recurrent UTIs were discussed. There were case studies to look at more practical ways to manage urology outpatients and discuss in detail more complex urological surgery and therapies. This helped me to appreciate the difficulties our community colleagues frequently face. Delegates enjoyed a guest appearance from Dermatologist and comedian Dr Ahmed Kazmi, who had us all in stitches about his experience with renal colic. Through the laughter of what sounded like the worst experience of his life, it made me appreciate how much our patients suffer with stones and stents alike. Overall, an excellent workshop that really helped me understand the general practice aspects of urology.
