YURO: SINCE ITS INCEPTION
Mr Marlon Perera - UROLOGIST, FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR
I joined YURO at its inception, alongside Dr Todd Manning and the late Dr Daniel Christidis. At the time of joining, I was conducting a PhD at the Department of Urology at Austin Health with Prof Damien Bolton. My initial involvement with YURO was in the capacity as ‘Senior Clinical Research Supervisor’. My association with YURO allowed me to build meaningful and lasting research partnerships that continue to be active and fruitful to this day.
I am now a urological surgeon and a current Fulbright Scholar, accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. I conducted a majority of my urology training in Queensland, and completed SET6 at the Austin. I have an interest in uro-oncology and minimally invasive surgery and am currently completing Fellowship training in Robotic Surgery and Uro-oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), New York, USA.
Since my time at YURO, I actively participated in clinical research and have submitted my PhD (Urology) through the University of Melbourne. I have published extensively with over 140 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals and frequently presenting at international congresses. Of these publications are several first-author papers in European Urology, Nature Urology and JAMA Oncology. Among these publications, several have been featured heavily in the major authoritative guidelines, including the European Urologic Association (EUA) and the American Urologic Association (AUA) guidelines for the treatment of prostate cancer. Similarly, alternate publications have been used as a primary data source by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommendations for the management of Benign Prostatic hyperplasia.
In addition to over $100,000AUD in research grants, I was also awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 2021, the Villis Marshall Prize (for Best Scientific Paper by a Trainee at USANZ, 2017), Daniel Christidis Scholarship (for contribution to urological research, USANZ, 2020), the RC Bennet Medal (for Best Scientific Paper at Vic RACS, 2017), Best Presentation (Vic USANZ, 2017), and the Frank Gardiner Medal (for Best Presentation at Qld USANZ, 2018).
